Bent Willow Farm is a family owned business founded in 2006 by Luc & Leigh Pouliot. The farm is located in Kapuskasing, a small town in Northern Ontario. Luc was born and raised in Kapuskasing. Although a history of farming existed in Luc’s family, he did not grow up in an agricultural setting. It was later learned that his great-grandfather had helped to build the barn in the 1940’s. Leigh was born in PEI. Leigh grew up in the heart of Ottawa and was a true city girl. Her first visit to Northern Ontario was during a co-op placement at a local pulp and paper mill. It was there that she met Luc. She quickly came to love the setting & lifestyle of Northern Ontario. In April 2006 Luc and Leigh purchased a rural property with a farmhouse, 100 acres and a barn. This property was selected with no intentions of farming but simply because of a joy of country life. The property had been a farm in the past but the pastures were overgrown, the fencing had long fallen over and the barn required a massive clean-up. In May 2006, friends & neighbors had some sheep but needed to make way in their barn for an additional horse. Luc and Leigh decided to adopt two of these sheep. Already owning two border collies, it seemed only logical to give them something to herd. From those two sheep they determined to become shepards. After much research it was determined that Jacob sheep would be an ideal sheep for Bent Willow Farm. Jacob sheep are a rare primitive breed of sheep that has changed little since it’s origins. They are a hardy sheep known to be good mothers & easy lambers, have durable hoofs, and a fleece enjoyed by handspinners. |
